Thinking Space was developed at the Tavistock Clinic in 2002 in order to promote thinking about racism and other forms of discrimination in the self and in the other. This series will comprise 5 Thinking Spaces on race and racism:

Presenters

Frank Lowe is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, creator of Thinking Space and formerly Head of Social Work in the Adolescent and Adult Directorate at The Tavistock Clinic. Before joining the Tavistock in 2001, he was a Social Services Inspector with the Department of Health and had been a manager for over twelve years of local authority mental health and children services. He has developed services at the Tavistock to help improve access to psychotherapy for black and minority ethnic young people and teaches on several Tavistock courses. He has written several papers on working with adolescence, race, and psychotherapy and has edited Thinking Space: Promoting thinking about race, culture and diversity in Psychotherapy and beyond (Karnac 2013). He was given an award for Psychoanalysis and Diversity by the British Psychoanalytic Council in 2015 for establishing ‘Tottenham Thinking Space’ and has a long-standing interest in making psychotherapy more accessible to poor and marginalized communities.

Helen Morgan is a Fellow of the British Psychotherapy Foundation and is a training analyst and supervisor for the Jungian Analytic Association within the BPF. She works mainly in private practice as an analyst and also supervises in both the individual and the group setting. Her background is in therapeutic communities with adolescents and in adult mental health. She was chair of the British Association of Psychotherapists for four years until February 2008, and of the British Psychoanalytic Council from 2015-18. She has written a number of papers including several on racism and psychotherapy, and her book, The Work of Whiteness. A Psychoanalytic Perspective (2021) is published by Routledge.

Narendra Keval is a Psychoanalyst, Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and a Consultant Clinical Psychologist. He specialised in clinical work with patients suffering from complex personality disorders in a range of settings in the NHS and currently works in full-time private practice. He is a visiting lecturer at the Tavistock Clinic, London and has been a visiting speaker in the UK, South Africa, Washington and New York. He is a member of the British Psychoanalytic Society, Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. His book “Racist States of Mind: Understanding the Perversion of Curiosity and Concern” was published by Karnac Books in 2016.

Fakhry Davids MSc (Clinical Psych) is a psychoanalyst in full-time clinical practice. He is a Fellow and Training Analyst of the British Psychoanalytic Society, a Member of the Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists, a Board Member of PCCA (Partners in Confronting Collective Atrocities, www.p-cca.org), and a Member of APsaA’s Holmes Commission for Racial Equality in Psychoanalysis (Co-REAP). He holds honorary appointments in the Tavistock Clinic, the Psychoanalysis Unit, University College London and the Department of Psychosocial and Psychoanalytic Studies, Essex University. He is author of Internal Racism: A Psychoanalytic Approach to Race and Difference (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).

Cancellations made less than 30 days in advance of the first session are nonrefundable and non-transferable unless COR is able to fill your spot with another registrant. Cancellations made on or after the start of the first session are 100% non-refundable and nontransferable. In the event of an emergency, each situation will be considered.

INSTALLMENT PLANS

For purchasing an installment plan, a “Free Trial” means there will be a delay of the charge until class begins. The sign up fee is an initial charge to secure your place within the class.
