This course will span the academic year–18 sessions– and will explore the context and development of the basic but complex object relations concepts arising from Freud and expanded upon by Klein and later theorists and clinicians. We will also consider necessary conditions for growing a mind, and the clinical implications when that process is affected by neglect or trauma.

What is field theory? What does this development in psychoanalytic theory mean? Who are its leading thinkers? This class is an introduction to Field Theory, a body of theoretical refinement that developed through the work of Melanie Klein on projective identification and Bion’s study of transformations. The course will cover original papers that are identified as initiators of field theory and will conclude with contemporary publications.

Enika Cocoli Bowen, PhD
Wednesdays at 7:30 – 9:00 pm; Starting on February 8th, 2023
The first of its kind, this elective class begins with an overview of Bion’s K-link. It then extends to additional sources from philosophy and theology spanning 25 centuries. From Socrates to the North African shores of St. Augustine all the way to us in the 20th and 21st centuries, this study will dive into the complex nature of curiosity, its benefits and shortcomings. The ultimate aim is the enrichment of clinical work as a whole and the therapeutic activity of each session.
Terry Hanson, PhD
Tuesdays at 7:30 – 9:00 pm; Starting on February 21, 2023
Wilfred Bion and Harold Searles both worked extensively with psychotic patients and describe in their works this universal background of psychotic anxieties and how it gets registered in psychoanalytic work. We will read a couple of articles from each of them and hopefully help each other in growing our capacities to recognize and to bear psychotic pressures. This course is cosponsored by COR and the Alliance.
Michael Louderback, MA LMHC
Tuesdays at 6:30 – 8:00 pm; Starting on April 18, 2023
This course is full.
With all of the theories and knowledge and wisdom of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy—now, more than ever—at our fingertips, what (and how and when) do we make use of these when we are actually sitting with another complicated person? How do we begin to distill and understand the essences of these many ideas to not only to change our own souls, but also the souls of others? How do we creatively become the kind of psychotherapist that is not only helpful and kind, but transformative and challenging?
Terry Hanson, PhD
Tuesdays at 7:30 – 9:00 pm; Starting on July 11, 2023
In this course we will read selections from Bion’s memoir “All My Sins Remembered” and explore what it means to continue to deepen our capacity for self reflection and self knowledge. This course is for those who are well along in or have completed their analytic treatment.

Groups
Thomas Saunders, MSW or Sean Jackson, MA
Ongoing Enrollment

Groups
Thomas Saunders, MSW, LCSW
Revolving Enrollment
Observing an infant weekly from birth to one or two years provides a unique opportunity to learn about early childhood development as it is happening. The evolution of the earliest relationships with parents, siblings, and others in the surroundings can be seen in all its complexity. The baby’s own experience, its efforts to hold itself together, to develop trust, to have an internal good object, and to develop symbols can all be seen. The observation provides an opportunity for the cultivation of emotional openness to the experience in the observer. For over 20 years Tom Saunders has been active in Infant Observation, and his Infant Observation Group has become a respected group within the psychoanalytic community.
